What to Expect at Your First Hair Appointment With a New Stylist
Trying a new hairstylist can feel a little intimidating.
You're trusting someone new with your hair, trying to explain what you want, and maybe wondering whether you booked the right service - or what you're even supposed to ask for.
My goal is to make your first appointment feel comfortable, collaborative, and clear from the beginning.
Here's what you can expect when you visit Hair by Gina.O for the first time.
Before Your Appointment
Before your first visit, you'll complete a consultation form where you can tell me about your hair, goals, concerns, and previous color or chemical history.
You can also upload inspiration photos, which are incredibly helpful.
And don't worry about knowing salon terminology. You don't need to tell me whether you need balayage, foilyage, a root melt, or 47 strategically placed foils. 😂
Tell me what you want your hair to look and feel like, how much maintenance you're comfortable with, and anything you definitely don't want.
We'll figure out the technique together.
How Should You Arrive?
Unless we've discussed something different for your specific service, arrive with your hair in its normal state and avoid excessive product buildup.
You don't need to style your hair perfectly for me. Seeing how your hair naturally behaves can actually give me useful information about your texture, density, growth patterns, and everyday styling.
If you're coming for color, being honest about your previous color history is especially important - even if it happened months or years ago.
Previous permanent color, lightener, box color, henna, keratin treatments, perms, relaxers, and other chemical services can affect what is safely and realistically achievable.
Your Consultation
Every first appointment begins with a conversation.
We'll talk about:
What you like and don't like about your current hair
Your desired result
Previous color and chemical history
Your normal styling routine
How frequently you want to visit the salon
Your maintenance preferences
Your long-term hair goals
Inspiration photos are welcome, but we'll use them as communication tools rather than exact blueprints.
Your natural color, starting level, texture, density, condition, previous color, and haircut all influence how a particular look translates to your hair.
I'll explain what I recommend, what we can realistically accomplish during that appointment, and how the result fits into a longer-term plan when multiple appointments may be needed.
What If You're Not Sure What Service to Book?
You don't need to diagnose your own hair before making an appointment.
My service menu is designed around the result and amount of change you're looking for rather than expecting you to choose professional techniques.
For blonding and dimensional color, for example, you can choose Low, Medium, or High Impact based on how much change you'd like to see. Once you're in my chair, I'll customize the placement and techniques needed to create that result.
If you're still unsure, complete my consultation form and I can help guide you.
A separate consultation is required for services such as color corrections, platinum transformations, and certain specialty services.
During Your Service
Once we've agreed on the plan, we'll begin your service.
I want you to understand what's happening with your hair, so I'll explain recommendations and answer questions along the way without making you feel like you accidentally enrolled in cosmetology school.
Depending on your appointment, we'll also talk about your hair's condition, maintenance schedule, styling habits, and anything that could help you get better results at home.
Color and blonding services include the customized color and toner or gloss needed for the booked service, along with shampoo, blow-dry, and finished style. Haircuts and treatments can be added separately when desired.
What If Your Goal Can't Happen in One Appointment?
Sometimes the healthiest path to your goal takes more than one visit.
This is especially common with major lightening, previous dark color, color corrections, significant changes, or hair with an extensive chemical history.
If that's the case, I'll explain why and create a plan for getting there rather than compromising your hair simply to reach a result faster.
Healthy hair and realistic expectations come first.
After Your Appointment
Before you leave, we'll talk about how to maintain your result.
Depending on your service, that may include:
When to schedule your next appointment
How to care for your color at home
Styling recommendations
Product recommendations when they're genuinely useful
Any longer-term plan we've created for your hair
My goal isn't just for your hair to look beautiful when you leave the salon.
I want you to understand how to live with it, maintain it, and feel good about it between appointments too.
