How to Find the Right Hair Stylist in Roanoke
Finding a new hairstylist can feel surprisingly overwhelming.
Search "hair stylist near me" and suddenly you're looking at dozens of salons, Instagram pages, Google reviews, service menus, and photos trying to figure out who you should trust with your hair.
And here's something I think is important to say as a hairstylist:
Not every great stylist is going to be the right stylist for you.
We all have different strengths, approaches, personalities and specialties. You also have your own priorities when it comes to your hair, budget, maintenance and salon experience.
The goal isn't simply to find a "good hairstylist."
It's to find one who's a good fit for you.
If you're looking for a hairstylist in Roanoke, Salem or the surrounding area, here are some things I'd consider before booking.
1. Look Beyond the Prettiest Before-and-After Photo
Social media is a great place to start when researching a stylist, but don't judge their work based on one beautiful transformation.
Scroll.
Look at several clients.
Does the stylist regularly work with hair similar to yours? Do you see results that resemble what you're looking for?
If you want dimensional brunette hair but someone's entire portfolio is platinum blondes, they may be incredibly talented—but their specialty might not align with your goal.
The same goes for gray blending, curly hair, short cuts, vivid color, lived-in blonding or any other specific service.
You don't necessarily need a stylist who only performs one type of hair service. You just want some evidence that they're comfortable doing the kind of work you're asking them to do.
2. Read Reviews - But Pay Attention to What People Say
Star ratings are helpful, but the actual comments can tell you much more.
Look for patterns.
Do guests mention feeling listened to?
Do they talk about the consultation?
Does the stylist explain what they're doing?
Are clients happy with how their hair grows out?
Do people feel comfortable asking questions?
A review saying "My hair looks amazing!" is wonderful.
But a review saying, "She really listened to what I wanted, explained what was realistic and helped me come up with a plan I could maintain" tells you something completely different about the experience.
That's valuable information when you're deciding whether someone's approach will work for you.
3. Think About Your Maintenance Level Before You Choose Your Inspiration
This is a big one.
It's easy to save a beautiful photo without considering what maintaining that hair actually requires.
Before your appointment, ask yourself:
How often am I realistically willing to come back to the salon?
Every four weeks?
Every eight weeks?
A few times a year?
There's no wrong answer.
But your answer can completely change what I recommend.
For example, someone who wants very bright blonde hair but only wants to visit the salon twice a year may need a different placement and color plan than someone who's happy to maintain their blonde every six to eight weeks.
The right stylist shouldn't just recreate your inspiration photo.
They should help translate the feeling of that photo into something that works with your actual life.
4. Don't Be Afraid of a Thorough Consultation
A good consultation may involve more questions than you're expecting.
What do you like about your current hair?
What don't you like?
What have you had done previously?
Do you color your hair at home?
How often do you heat style?
How much maintenance do you want?
When you show me an inspiration photo, I may even ask what specifically you like about it.
Is it the brightness?
The warmth?
The dimension?
The haircut?
The way it's styled?
Two people can look at the exact same photo and notice completely different things.
That's why I spend time asking questions before I start.
I'd rather spend an extra ten minutes making sure we're talking about the same thing than realize halfway through your appointment that we had two completely different interpretations of "natural blonde."
5. Pay Attention to How a Stylist Communicates About What's Realistic
One of the biggest green flags when choosing a stylist is someone who's comfortable telling you when something isn't realistic.
That doesn't mean they should immediately tell you "no."
It means they should be able to explain what's possible, what's risky and what alternatives might get you closer to your goal.
Your current hair color, previous chemical services, condition, texture and color history all affect what can safely happen during an appointment.
Sometimes we can absolutely achieve the inspiration photo.
Sometimes we can get there, but it will take multiple appointments.
And sometimes the healthiest decision is to modify the goal.
I'd much rather create a plan with you than sacrifice the condition of your hair trying to force a result in one appointment.
6. Make Sure You Understand the Pricing
Hair services can vary significantly in price—even within the same city.
Part of that comes down to experience, education, products, time, salon structure and what's included in the service.
Instead of comparing prices based only on the service name, look at what you're actually receiving.
Does blonding include a gloss?
Is styling included?
Are treatments additional?
Does the stylist charge hourly, à la carte or based on the amount of work involved?
Are there additional product charges for especially thick or long hair?
A stylist's website or booking page should give you enough information to understand the general investment before you arrive.
For larger transformations or corrective work, an exact price may not be possible without a consultation.
What matters is that expectations are discussed before the service begins.
7. Consider the Experience You Want, Too
Technical skill matters enormously.
But you're also spending several hours with this person.
Think about the type of salon experience that makes you comfortable.
Maybe you love a busy, energetic salon.
Maybe you prefer something quieter.
Maybe you want to chat through your entire appointment. Maybe you'd rather answer a few consultation questions and then relax.
Maybe you want someone who will explain every formula and foil placement.
Maybe you absolutely do not care—you just want to read your Kindle while someone makes your hair pretty.
All valid. 😂
Your comfort matters.
You should feel comfortable communicating with your stylist, asking questions and speaking up if you're unsure about something.
8. You Shouldn't Have to Know Salon Terminology
This is something I really want new guests to understand.
You don't need to know whether you need a balayage, babylight, foilayage, root melt, lowlight, toner, gloss or partial highlight before contacting a stylist.
That's our job.
Instead, tell us what you want your hair to look and feel like.
Bring inspiration photos.
Tell us what you don't like about your current hair.
Tell us how often you want to maintain it.
Tell us what you're willing—or unwilling—to do at home.
From there, your stylist can determine the techniques and services needed to create that result.
What I Look for When Working With a New Guest
At Hair by Gina.O, my first priority is understanding what you're actually asking for before I start thinking about formulas or techniques.
I want to know your hair history, your goals, what you like and don't like, how much maintenance you're comfortable with and what kind of salon experience you're looking for.
I also want you to understand the plan.
If I think something will take multiple appointments, I'll tell you.
If I think there's a lower-maintenance option that would give you a similar result, we'll talk about it.
And if I don't think your hair can safely handle what you're asking for right now, I'm going to tell you that too.
My philosophy is pretty simple:
Healthy hair first.
Beautiful color isn't very beautiful if we destroy your hair trying to get there.
The Right Hairstylist Is the One You Trust
Finding the right hairstylist may take a little research, but it's worth it.
Look at their work. Read their reviews. Explore their website. Pay attention to how they communicate. Consider whether their approach aligns with your priorities.
Most importantly, find someone you feel comfortable being honest with.
Because the best salon results don't come from the stylist simply doing whatever they want—or the client having to direct every step of the appointment.
They come from collaboration.
You bring your goals.
I bring my knowledge and experience.
And somewhere in the middle, we create hair that actually works for you.
